Zero Concavity Die Stamping

Die-stamping machines for foam products have in the past been semi-automatic and ranged in size from the small swing beam, or clicker, presses, through the medium size travelling head presses up to the larger flat bed machines. As well as utilizing all of this range in our foam conversion factory, we also have an automatic cnc model which allows full size foam sheets and rolls to be loaded and programmed to run until all the parts are cut.

Traditionally tooling for these machines was steel rule bent to shape and inserted into wooden housing. The pressure of the head stamping into the foam block cuts the required shape. Water-jet cutting has superceded die-stamping for some applications, but it is still a very cost effective way of producing small to medium parts in high volumes.

When punching foams such as Plastazote, Evazote, Ethafoam and Stratocell, there is a concavity on the edges where the press head has forced the material down onto the sharp blade which cuts at the last minute as the head board hits the blade. At Polyformes we have managed to introduce a system that die-cuts foam without leaving concavity. This is of benefit when the end requirement is presentation foams in such industries as beauty and cosmetics, or where the foam edge is an integral part of the packaging.
