Polyformes is 35 years old this month! Originally established in a small factory unit in Greaves Way here in Leighton Buzzard, the company was set up in conjunction with the Wilford Rubber Manufacturing Company as Wilford Polyformes Ltd., to optimize sales of a relatively new material, expanded polyethylene foam, and at that time, specifically Plastazote foam.
In the very early days, the Wilford Rubber Company supplied Onazote and Rubazote as well as its solid rubbers. The Onazote was expanded Ebonite, and the Rubazote was expanded rubber. Onazote was used for cold insulation, fairings and lifebuoys. When faced with metal or plywood in early composite structures, it was used for tables, bulkheads and flooring. Rubazote was used for primitive crash pads, shock absorbtion, cushioning, non-slip mats and gaskets.
With the advent of Plastazote and the setting up of Wilford Polyformes in 1977, the company specialised initially in the conversion of Plastazote grades, quickly adding the Ethafoam and Jiffycell non-cross linked foams as lower cost base packaging foams. Wilfords, as people used to call the company, then rented another larger unit in Greaves Way, and in 1986, moved into a purpose built factory in Cherrycourt Way in Leighton Buzzard.
By this time, Evazote and an enlarged range of densities and colours in Plastazote had been added to the standard stocklines. The Ethafoam materials were available in 2lb, 4lb, 7lb and 9lb density, and Stratocell 28kg/m3 low cost foam planks were available. Wilford Polyformes split into two totally separate companies with Wilford Manufacturing remaining at Unit 5 Greaves Way concentrating on rubbers whilst Polyformes Ltd moved to Cherrycourt Way and focused on the foam materials.
Polyformes has gone from strength to strength by investing in machinery, staff training and R & D, utilizing its all round foam conversion capabilities in order to be able to provide all industry sectors with foam products from swimfloats for the leisure industry to missile cones and cradles for the defence sector. As foam is an integral part of packaging, Polyformes offers packaging solutions for the protection and transit of all articles and products. To complement customers foam requirements Polyformes also supply cases rugged waterproof cases, small parts plastic cases, bespoke flight cases, cartons and timber crates.
